New listing, Hi Vallee Farm is situated in the floristically rich Lesueur area, Western Australia. Owner Don Williams says, “We do have some wildflowers all year round. The surrounding area is also great for wildflowers and other attractions such as Stockyard Gully Caves.”
Said Don, “It is our very busy time. The campers that we have in right now have Camps 9.” Peak time indeed, because it is wildflower season in WA.
Although the camp priced just over the our budget $ symbol, it is unique. You can take wildflower tour with local experts. They say, one fifth of the property has been left untouched, and contains some of the greatest botanical diversity in the world. with many rare and priority flora it is of very high conservation value. So special is the property, a field guide has been produced, that contains over 520 native plant species that occur in the Northern Kwongan area.
Don and his wife Joy also offer bird-watching tours or you can be guided around their 2000-hectare sheep and wheat farm.
Don said people love that the camp site is quiet and remote.The simple facilities include chemical toilets, cold showers (hot showers are about 500m away), fireplaces, picnic tables, pets allowed (but no cats) and powered sites are available on a first-in basis.
Oh, and ask Don to tell you where to catch koonacs. Similar to our yabbies in Queensland, I have just read these are “relatively large freshwater crayfish, growing up to 200 mm in total length” (www.fish.wa.gov.au). They are found further inland than marron, and they can survive drought.
