The Ode always brings a tear to my eye. ANZAC Day is a solemn reminder of all the lives lost and impacted by war. This year it also commemorates the 80th anniversary of D-Day in WWII and Army women serving overseas.
As we travel Australia, we see war memorialised in avenues of trees, swimming pools, gates, arches, cenotaphs, crosses, gardens, hospitals – even roads and bridges. More often, we see cenotaphs, obelisks or a “digger” statue, like this one from Goondiwindi, Queensland.
On April 25, Australians gather around them, to remember all who have fought for our freedom. We also thank those serving our country today, working for peace.
