See, do and free camp around Mansfield, Victoria

We’ve been to Mansfield, Victoria a few times now, on our honeymoon (!!) and last year after a night free camping at the Toombullup School Site near another free camp, Stringybark Creek, where police were murdered by Ned Kelly and gang.
Back again and a chance to (between campsite work)…

Shop

Enjoy the CWA Op shop and murals (fitting I saw this and the felt mural on the International Women’s Day).

Local tips

Stop for more tips at the Info Centre (go see the felt mural, and ‘The Man From Snowy River’ movie memorabilia.

Pottery

A pottery market! Heaven! So many stalls and so much talent! Very impressed with my stash… live music to boot. Simply perfectly timed on the long weekend. You’ll find more pottery and crafted goods any time of hte year at the lovely Made in Mansfield store.

Taste

Lunch out – The Produce Store. Yum. There are cafes all down the main street.

Sip

Delatite Winery – double or triple yum – love that this region produces my favourite wines – chardonnay, pinot gris and riesling. Bubbles, too! It was $10 for a tasting session and $20 to add in their specialty wines and gins. The restaurant was popular, too.

Hotels aplenty – we only visited a couple of these – Boonie Doon Hotel, Jamieson Brewery, Jamieson Hotel, Kevington Hotel (open weekends, and for camping), as well as the pubs in town.

Drives, hikes, waterfalls …

Next time we’ll drive up to Mount Buller, perhaps out to Licola!

And there is lots more we could have seen and done, all from our free camp Doctor’s Creek Reserve, south of Jamieson.

As well as caravan parks, you can even camp at a Zoo! Tents or swags allowed, two day max, and only as part of your zoo experience. Plus some of the free camping areas (most pet friendly) are:

  • Upper Goulburn River, south of Jamieson
  • Delatite Arms Reserve, near pretty Goughs Bay – all the sites are on Lake Eildon
  • Big River State Forest
  • Howqua Hills
  • Mount Samaria State Park and Blue Range Creek in the north
  • Alpine National Park and the famous Craig’s Hut

I think we’ll be back, so much more to sip, sup and explore.  You can read more on the Ned Kelly Route here
