Must see and dos in Julia Creek, Queensland

East of Cloncurry on the Overlander’s Way, Julia Creek have made tourism their business, an RV Friendly Town that welcomes travellers, offering fun ‘bucket-list’ activities for all. It was the combination of a soak in hot springs and seeing a little native marsupial that made sure this location was a stopover night. Book to see the dunnart feeding at the visitor centre, daily at 10am and 2pm (weekdays only from November to March). I didn’t know what a dunnart was – but this rare little critter, and the promise of an artesian bath, kept us here overnight. That’s not all

Where to camp at Julia Creek, Queensland

This fantastic little town in North West Queensland, has two sites for camping… Julia Creek RV Stop If you’d like to stay at the RV Stop, you must have a fully self-contained RV, no tents. In this shire, that means “built in and/or propriety brand toilets secured in the van” with a black water holding tank or toilet cassette and no portable showers. You’ll need to collect a permit, valid for 96 hours, from the Julia Creek Visitor Information Centre, or from onsite camp hosts in peak season (April to September). Tour and camp through Blackall, Tambo, Augathella and the Barcoo River

We rated Blackall, Tambo and Augathella in Outback Queensland as one of the most friendly RV destinations from our winter road trip. We had to whiz through but my highlights were: picking up a Tambo Teddy “fleece” (so soft) seeing the word Barcoo everywhere! (I’ve always wanted to visit the Outer Barcoo) picnic by the Barcoo River at Stubby Bend FREE CAMP at Tambo a beverage at Royal Carrangarra Hotel, where the chicken races are held in Tambo seeing the Smiley Mural, and learning about Meat Ants at Augathella all 3 towns have the best river camping, and are very

Morven Hotel (not a camp) Sadleirs Waterhole Morven Murweh shire, QLD

Camp near Sadleir’s Waterhole – you don’t need your togs for this one in Morven, QLD

Love a waterhole… and Sadleir’s Waterhole (also known as the Morven Hotel) is a beauty! After chatting with other travellers on the verandah, we parked down the road at the Rec Ground, then walked back for dinner! Well done, Morven – you made our BEST OF list for the BEST PRICED STEAK. Not only was it under $30, but it was perfectly cooked, generously sized, with mash, vege and chips! Generous serves, yummy food, friendly service and an interesting story: ANZAC Day 2016 the old pub burnt down. Four years without the hub of the community, eight families banded together

5 things NOT TO MISS in Mt Isa, Outback Queensland

We would have loved to stay longer than one night at Mount Isa, but we are on our way back now through Queensland! We also appreciated the local tips and memories growing up here from my sis-i-l Jodie! Here they are:  1.  Town Lookout A must! You can see the mine so well from here, and it explains what each building and chimney does. Copper, lead, zinc and silver are mined in the region. If you want to go underground – check out the Hard Times Mine. 2. Underground Hospital Not what I was expecting at all to see in

“Come a Waltzing Matilda with me” destinations and a Banjo Paterson Pub Crawl

PLEASE let me know if stopping at destinations made famous by poet Banjo Paterson, gives you a buzz? Especially when the words “Waltzing Matilda” means to carry a swag or travel the road. Appropriate, isn’t it! I had goosebumps camping the last leg of our winter trip. In Outback Queensland, we hiked into the ACTUAL location of the billabong from “Waltzing Matilda”! True. (And there were brolgas to boot!) Imagine my delight as we drove past signs for the Outer Barcoo – “where churches are few, and men of religion are scanty” ran through my head! Yes, I highly recommend
