The BEST Queensland island for camping with your dog and more dog-friendly islands

The BEST Queensland island for camping with your dog is North Stradbroke Island, off Redland Bay in Brisbane. Warwick wrote in to say he loved our Straddie article and asked if there were 2WD, pet friendly camps… Unfortunately, to get to the only two areas that allow your pooch it is 4wd beach driving only.  Camp at Flinders Beach or Main Beach if you have a pet, as dogs are not allowed at any of the caravan parks. Although the National Parks will be out of bounds for you – there are still beautiful beaches to explore – Main Beach

North Gorge, North Stradbroke Island, Queensland
Camping

Best walk of the year (so far)

The hike around North Gorge, North Stradbroke Island, Queensland is short, has spectacular cliffs, marine life, a blowhole, and a surf club at the end!   We were told it was beautiful, but I was not prepared for the ocean views at every turn and the amazing gorge itself. The way the 1.2 km boardwalk winds its way around the cliff face really makes the most of the scenery. We spotted turtles and rays – we saw dolphins the next day – playing in the waves of Home Beach. No wonder this is a great spot for whale watching!  Start your

Why we love camping on Straddie, Queensland

We live on the beach, so we tend to camp in the bush. But here is an island we loved. Here’s what you need to know to camp on Minjerribah North Stradbroke Island – and why you don’t need a 4WD and you can bring the dog …  If you like to travel with a pooch, Flinders Beach and Main Beach are your options for camping – and you will need a 4WD. Our friend’s dog, Bruce, loved it! Facilities are limited and in some zones, there’s nothing provided. Do your research on the CAMPS App. There is so much

Take a 900 km doggo friendly island road trip

Sarah from @allthegear.illustrated took a 900km van trip with her pup for “solitude and sunshine; connection and clarity…wide open spaces and ocean air to breathe and adventure amongst”…and said it was perfect! She even saw a cane train for the first time, and took her dog, Nessie, on a boat.  Starting in Caloundra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, here where Sarah and her van Brian’s eight days were spent: MV Sarawak, Inskip Point, Rainbow Beach MV Sarawak, Inskip Point, Rainbow Beach – image Sarah from @allthegear.illustrated At Inskip Peninsula Recreation Reserve, you are right near K’gari Fraser Island, and north of

Finding camps along the New South Wales Pacific Coast

One of the frequent queries we receive is why aren’t there free camps along the Pacific Highway? Historically, the rest areas allowed free overnight stays. However, as travellers abused the 24 hour limit, with locations so close to beautiful beaches and towns… the government cracked down what was allowed. You will notice that listings were deliberately kept in the CAMPS book, so travellers could have a spot to rest overnight (not necessarily “camp”). Some of these regions were trialing an RV stopover at the rest areas – we felt it was important to provide options along the Pacific coast where

Take a sunflower trip

The Darling Downs in Queensland is THE place for sunflower drives. Sunflowers are a summer crop and only flower for 3-4 weeks. But you can find sunflowers from December to March and more on Darling Downs road trips.  For next season, pick your own at Warraba Sunflowers at Cambooya, Queensland. It is now closed. Tips: Please be respectful of farmers. Only go into properties if you have permission. Otherwise, take photos from the fence and enjoy that colour. More to see and do (from a local – Heatley grew up here, and our first bub was born in Toowoomba): Lake Leslie Goomburra State
