When you are in the dry Pilbara region of Western Australia, how good is it to find a campground that has riverside frontage, a beautiful red gorge and it is free! Please note: Carawine Gorge access is for 4WD vehicles and offroad RVs only.

CAMPS Ambassadors, Dale and Tracey told us, “This is definitely one to add to the bucket list. We didn’t know much about this place but we are so glad we came out here.”

“This free camp is located on the Oakover River. There are no facilities here but we were able to enjoy a campfire, a swim and we were also lucky enough to have grass where we camped.”

The gorge is on the million acre, Warrawagine Station. As a working cattle station, expect musters and crew around July and August.

Importantly, dogs are permitted on leads – please be aware baiting is in the area. You’ll spot plenty of birds and cows!

Important advice

Dale advises: “The last 14 km are dirt roads and when you get to the fork in the road, take the right hand fork if you are towing and it will take you out to the green grassy area along the river. If you take the left you will end up on the rocky camping area which can be a bit soft.”
