Last time, we shared some favourite pubs worth visiting when you are camping nearby. This time, we’re going one better: most are lesser-known pubs across Australia where you can actually camp. And the dog can camp, too!
From friendly country hotels and pub backyards to station stays and Territory taverns, these stops offer the best kind of road-trip combination: a place to pull up, a meal or drink close by, and no long drive back to camp afterwards.
Remember, send a video or pic of Dad in his happy place, we’d love to share some of your favourite camps and destinations around Australia! You could win him a $300 fuel voucher. Winner announced on Father’s Day!
Double O, Double L, Double EE
Toolleen Hotel, VIC is on one of the busiest crossroads during the gold rush. With wineries nearby, fantastic free camps, including the one across the road.
We highly recommend this place. We had a top meal. People were very friendly, and I’m sure we’ll be back. Since we’ve done this video, we’ve been told it’s pronounced “TOOL- leen”.
Border Fun
You’ll find Coburn Hotel, SA near the border with NSW on the Barrier Highway. Such a friendly pub. I wanted to camp at Cockburn Village down the road, and heard the goat curry is magnificent!
We have great memories at Balanggarra Home Valley Station, WA with the kids in 2013, and back again when we crossed the Gibb River Road. Poolside, sunshine, and no washing up!
Tassie Fave
Weldborough Hotel, TAS has donation camping, has toilet shower, pub meals, they specialise in ciders there and have entertainment as well.
We’ve visited Theebine Hotel, QLD a few times now. Last visit was for the reopening and new front deck. Great live music, then an easy toddle back to the van after the show.
Outback NSW
Stopped at Homebush Hotel, NSW en route to Mungo National Park, but if we’d had more time, it would have been a top night. The staff were friendly, and I’ll bet that sunset was a beauty…
Top End Pub
A group of us rocked into Darwin River Tavern, NT for lunch, on our way back from Litchfield. Didn’t realise that there was a crocodile and a swimming pool! Highly recommend.
