It is worth the little drive off the highway to find a modest little camp area, high on the hill. But what views – the Gywdir River awaited us below.
We had this free, pet-friendly riverside camp to ourselves, except for the hare – who hopped off as we arrived. Facilities include a large covered picnic shelter with tables, BBQ and firepit. BYO water.
Swim or fish here with views of the two bridges. This was such a peaceful spot, we loved our cool down in the river!
This site is suitable for all vehicles and camping. Big Rigs, note there is a bridge to drive under, on the road in. Take care in wet weather.
Gravesend also has two other freedom camps – the Gravesend Hotel (known as the Gravo Pub) for self contained vehicles and a donation site with toilets at the Gravesend Rec Reserve. All three sites are pet friendly.
This spot is just east of town, towards Warialda (another terrific town for campers in the beautiful Gwydir Region). Look for the track on the north side of the bridge and follow the signs.
