Murphy’s Haystacks, South Australia
Murphy’s Haystacks are ancient rock formations on a farm – in a paddock! There is a picnic area and toilet, and the site is not far from the highway. The budget camp area is pet friendly, has 24 hours maximum stay, mobile coverage, shade, limited level spots, but it is so unique, we loved it and we’ve given it our CAMPS tick of approval!
This pet friendly campsite is 37 km south east of Nhulunbuy, in East Arnhem Land. It has toilets, picnic tables and is 4WD only – suitable for camper trailers and tents. Permits required. Image by 20000ksinacampertrailer.
Thallon Recreation Grounds, Queensland
They are some of the most striking silos I have seen – and you can camp beside the artwork. The recreation grounds are pet friendly, and have plenty of amenities all for a few dollars a night. Here’s our trip out that way.
Riverglade Caravan Park, New South Wales
Prime position, Riverglade Caravan Park is right on the Tumut River in the Snowy Mountains region, New South Wales. You can fish, use the playground, volleyball court, and big BBQ area. Pets are allowed out of peak periods. Image by Michelle Dubois.
Stockton Lake, Western Australia
If you are after a vibrant blue lake, and a budget site with the CAMPS tick of approval – visit Stockton Lake near Collie in Western Australia. About 2.5 hours from Perth, there’s a large open area, welcome shade and accessible toilets. Image by The Average Wanderlust Couple.

JB Plain Hut is only 1.8 km from Dinner Plain, towards Hotham in the High Country. It is a walk-in site for tent camping – with a drop toilet. The hut is for emergency use, dogs aren’t allowed but fires are. There’s shade and mobile coverage. One skier set up right on the edge of the plain. It was a beautiful sight!
