First come, first served at Stockton Lake, Western Australia

If you are after a vibrant blue lake, and a budget site with the CAMPS tick of approval – visit WA site 169 in CAMPS 11 or find it on the Camps Australia Wide App.

Stockton Lake is 8km east of Collie on Piavanini Road, off the Collie – Darkan Road, about a 2.5 hour drive from Perth.

This is an artificial lake, previously an open-cut mine, filled with water and now popular for boating and water skiing. The boat ramp has had a bank collapse, so it is not accessible right now.

If you are wanting to cool off, swim at your own risk as the water is mildly acidic because it was a mine. The Parks and Wildlife Service recommend if you have sensitive skin, limit your exposure to the water.Additionally, the lake can become very deep and very cold, submerged rocks are a hazard so don’t dive or jump in.

For campers, expect a large open area with welcome shade, toilets with universal access, no designated individual campsites however it is still suitable for groups, families or individual camping.

Stephanie Lopaten from The Average Wanderlust Couple sent in her beautiful Instagram image of this popular site! She mentions that if you do bring your dog there are baits in the area, so please be on the alert. They also recommend a visit to the historic town of Coliie.

In their review on the Camps Australia Wide App, Stephanie tells us, “Love this place on a weeknight when nobody is around. Lake is most blue in the afternoon. Toilets on both sides of the camp areas. Short walk to the old mine entrance.”

Others advised, the larger area for the bigger vans is on one side with the other side more suitable for tents and best to be early! There is no day use fee to come enjoy the lake.

Check the entry signs to see if campfires are permitted, it is only in the concrete fire rings provided, depending on seasonal fire restrictions. BYO wood. Generators are allowed and it is suitable for big rigs. Picnic tables and mobile coverage is available.

You don’t need to worry about bookings – it is first-come, first-served. Camping fees are collected daily and must be paid in cash (bring the correct amount, as no change is provided).
