16,000+ Campsites Personally Checked By Our Team Since 1992
Every campsite in the CAMPS App and Camps Australia Wide travel guides has been personally checked by our team. Here’s exactly what that means.
There’s no shortage of camping information online. What’s in short supply is camping information you can trust. That’s the problem the “Personally Checked™ Standard” was built to solve and it’s been the foundation of everything Camps Australia Wide has done since 1992.
When we say personally checked, we mean exactly that. Our team physically drives to each campsite, photographs the entry point, videos the camping area and facilities, and evaluates the site against our 12-point Personally Checked criteria. On a typical checking trip we visit upwards of 25 campsites per day, sometimes covering thousands of kilometres across Australia to ensure our data reflects current conditions on the ground. To date, our record is Delatite Arm Reserve. One morning alone we checked 50 sites around Lake Eildon, Victoria! We were definitely ready for a counter lunch that day…
We also go directly to the source, local councils, land managers, and national park authorities to verify conditions before any listing goes live or gets updated. Sometimes we have to check with the local pub or general store because some areas are so remote, they are the only ones in the know.
Campsites are revisited and updated regularly. When conditions change between scheduled visits, we update immediately.
Every campsite in our database is evaluated against these 12 non-negotiable standards. A campsite either meets them, or it doesn’t appear in our database. There is no middle ground.
Crowdsourced camping information has a fundamental problem, it tells you what someone else experienced, not what you will experience. Reviews age and conditions change. The site that was pristine two years ago may be degraded today. Anonymous reviewers have no accountability for accuracy, no consistent criteria, and no obligation to update when things change.
When you open the CAMPS App, you’re not reading what strangers think. You’re reading what our team checked in person – recently, in person, against explicit criteria. That’s the difference between hoping you chose right and knowing you did.
Camps Australia Wide is owned and operated by Heatley and Michelle Gilmore – passionate Australian campers who have personally driven hundreds of thousands of kilometres verifying campsites across every state and territory. The majority of field verification work is done personally by Heatley and Michelle, supported by trusted CAMPS Ambassadors on the road and our office-based team.
Last year Heatley and Michelle travelled the Flinders Ranges, taking in remote South Australia, through the Wimmera-Mallee and Grampians, as well. The year prior they tackled the QLD’s Adventure Way, the Oodnadatta and Strezlecki Tracks, Great Central Road in WA, then north to the Pilbara, and Kimberley’s Dampier Peninsula and challenging Gibb River Road, returning through NT’s Barkly Highway and outback Queensland. Every year they return to the Victoria High Country, and explore more areas – this year from Ned Kelly Route through Woolshed Valley, to the remote Suggan Buggan and NSW’s Barry Way.
We are fiercely independent. Camps Australia Wide has never been owned by a caravan park chain, never carried paid or sponsored listings, and never compromised the Personally Checked standard for commercial relationships. Every recommendation in our database reflects one thing only – whether a campsite is genuinely good for you, the traveller.
Our trusted team, Jed, Tyla and Leisa are campers, too. They know how important it is if potable water is available in a remote desert area, or that the kilometres listed are correct.
They go above and beyond EVERY DAY to ensure our listings are as accurate as possible.
Over 16,000+ personally checked campsites across Australia – every one checked against our 12-point Personally Checked™ standard.
We list thousands of campgrounds, locations are on a regular rotation and audit! As soon as we finish, it starts again, either through personal visits by our team or verified contact with local councils and land managers. When significant changes occur between scheduled revisits, we update immediately.
Yes – full offline access is built in. All campsite data, maps, and facility information is accessible without any phone coverage. It is essential for remote Australian camping.
The CAMPS App is $14.99 AUD per year – a subscription that gives you continuous access to our full database as it’s updated, plus offline maps, live fuel pricing, and AI-powered trip planning. Available on iOS and Android.
CAW is a verification platform, not a review platform. Every campsite has been personally visited and checked by our team – zero crowdsourced or unverified entries. We are independently owned, have never been bought by a caravan park chain, and have maintained this standard since 1992.
In addition, we do not charge farmers, community groups, publicans or any camp or caravan park owner to list their campsite. It ensures we remain independent – and it gives rural communities and farmers a fair go. We also offer a booking platform for farmers and campsite managers/owners where they know the booking fees stay in Australia, and not to a foreign owned corporation.
