7 cracking places to camp in the 4 states and 1 territory we visited this year

Darwin River Tavern, NT - you can see the anthills!
Darwin River Tavern, NT - you can see the anthills!

We are just back from a trip to Armidale, NSW and we loved that all we needed to bring were two thin CAMPS Pendium books! NSW and QLD. In fact we have flown to NT in March and Tassie  in February – bringing only ONE super light book. Our trip to the Victorian High Country in the Easter school break – meant I only packed three state guides.

So we thought we’d show you some of favourite places the books took us too! Here’s a free oceanside camp and RV stop, a budget pub stay, recreation ground and farmstay plus a caravan park.

We love that they are not only light, but they include caravan parks as well as campgrounds. It makes it easy to compare sites in the same area, because they are on the same page.

They are only available in the Easy to Read size, as well. Which suits both Heatley and I – as our eyes aren’t quite as sharp as the kids’.

Jayce from Big4 Highlander Van Village, Armidale, New South Wales

It was lovely to meet so many travellers along the way! Here’s a shout out to the the new managers at Big4 Highlander Van Village, Armidale, New South Wales. Welcome, Jayse and Sonia! Jayce liked the new NSW guide – and seeing his park in there.

Kookaburra Camping and Caravan Park, NSW

We were very impressed with Kookaburra Camping near Deepwater/Glen Innes in the New England Region.

Lots of facilities, toilets, showers, camp kitchen, levelled site with fire pits, well spaced, unpowered sites and budget priced. Shade, sheep and character! Pet friendly, too!

William Kemp RV Stop, Gatton, QLD

William Kemp RV Stop in Qld is free, pet friendly, with a dump point and water views. Next door is a playground in the picnic area. Plus you can easily walk to town. It is for 48 hours maximum stay, and with BBQ, picnic tables, plenty of grassy sites and shade. Thank you, Gatton!

Marrawah Green Point Beach Camping Area, Marrawah, Tasmania

We thought this was a little pearler of a free camp at Marrawah Green Point Beach. The town is pretty remote, west of beautiful Stanley and north of Arthur River. It has the last pub you’ll see for a while on this wild coastline. The site is located way out of town right behind the dunes. It has a picnic area beside the beach with great views – with toilets, playground and a protected BBQ shelter.

Ensay Recreation Area, Victoria

Expect hot showers, clean toilets, kids playground and lovely views at this rural recreation ground. Power is available – and all types of camping is welcome, with room for Big Rigs! Relax fireside and pets are allowed. The Great Alpine Road is a wonderful route for campers, you can camp beside old cattleman’s huts and pristine creeks – as well as in villages, like this one. Watch the timing, though! It was brisk up the mountian when we were there only 3 weeks ago – and now there is snow at Hotham. Brrr!

Darwin River Tavern, NT

We stopped in for a lovely, generous sized lunch after more adventures and waterfall swims in beautiful Litchfield National Park. The pub has a lot of charisma – beautiful timber tables and seating, large cool rooms, a new pool and a freshwater crocodile. I thought my fellow travellers were pulling my leg, but there really was one on site. They have onsite cabins and a large grassy field behind a large carpark.
