July has brought a real mix of camping updates from around Australia, with plenty of positive updates, a few temporary closures, and some handy changes to keep in mind before you hit the road. As always, thanks to our wonderful camping community for sharing updates as they travel. Read on to see what’s new this month!
Upgrades & Improvements
The Bajool Country Hotel in QLD is currently undergoing renovations, and while some campers have been told it’s closed, the new owners have confirmed that camping is still welcome on-site during this period. The pub itself is expected to reopen in July, so it won’t be long until things are back up and running again. If you’re passing through, feel free to stop in, set up camp, and support the place while the upgrades are underway.
At Wolca Reserve, Mt. Perry in Qld – This is under new stewardship so there’s some upgrades happening. It’s no longer run by Council so there is a temporary closure as the new owners get ready for reopening. We’ve been advised it will be run by the Mt Perry sports and rec club. You can check their Facebook page for updates. Pets are permitted on leash here and its for self contained vehicles only at the moment.
From Shark Bay in WA – The Blue Dolphin Caravan Park in Denham is now known as Mia Mia Shark Bay. Also under new management, it’s the same beautiful spot with a fresh new name! Along with the rebrand, there’s also a brand-new website plus updated phone and contact details. You’ll find all the latest information in your Camps Australia Wide App.
Temporary Closure
Dangars Gorge, NSW – The Dangars Gorge precinct in Oxley Wild Rivers NP is strictly closed while visitor facilities are being upgraded. The areas that will be closed include
● Dangars Gorge Campground
● Dangars Falls Picnic Area
● Dangars Falls lookouts
● McDirtys walking track
● Sailsbury Waters walking track
NPWS will be making improvements to the campground, walking tracks and signage upgrades as well as installing a new pedestrian bridge. During this time, visitors to Oxley Wild Rivers NP can still access other visitor precincts, such as Long Point, Gara Gorge, Wollomombi Falls, and for the more adventurous, Riverside or Halls Peak. Please note that access to Riverside and Halls Peak requires an access permit and a low-range 4WD vehicle. More information can be found on the NPWS website.
Trail Notes
The Aileron Hotel & Roadhouse, NT – are now offering unpowered camping for free! Yay. Powered sites are still payable of course and if you’re camping for free you can grab a hot shower for a small fee of $5. Grab breakfast or Dinner at the roadhouse.
In Tasmania – Derby Park located just as you enter town has closed the shower facilities only due to some rising ground water issues, however the camp remains open.
On the WA/NT Border – A recent review suggested that 24-hour stays are no longer permitted at the WA/NT Border Rest Area on the Victoria Highway. We’d like to assure travellers this is a designated 24-hour Rest Area and confirmed with bot h the WA authorities and a quick phone chat with Quarantine Border staff, who advised they will direct you to an overnight parking area if you wish to stay. Most helpful if you have fruit and veg you wish to consume before crossing into WA. Remember its a 24 hr rest area not a long term camping area .. Safe travels enjoy and eat those vegies
The Maryvale Crown Hotel Qld – This stop is no longer located behind the Hotel but has moved to the Old Railway Reserve. Now named the Maryvale Old Railway Reserve you’ll find it on the bend between Weinholt & Hodgson Sts. Donation box on the side of the Hall pls for upkeep. Meals still at Hotel.
River Drive Van Park Innisfail, QLD – This Park is run by Cassowary Regional Council who have closed this until further notice. At this stage we think its only temporary but will update you when we know more.
New Dump Point
Nuriootpa, SA – There’s a new dump point near McDonalds. It is 24/7. There’s good parking for access and its also adjacent to an EV Charging station. It’s 100 metres from Maccas, Kentucky Fried and some Vietnamese food on the Go. Plus, BP for fuel.
Pet Friendly
At RACV Cobram, VIC – this was previously a no dogs site but has now been changed to Pets Seasonal. Dogs are now permitted between May 1st to August 31st and only on certain caravan sites. Outside those dates you are not permitted to have a pet onsite.
At Litchfield in the Northern Territory – Zebra Stone Campground near Batchelor have been undergoing some renovations and are open again for the season. They are now pet friendly on lead, its big rig and campfire friendly too. They’ve also reduced their camp fee to $10 per person, definitely another bonus visiting this campspot that has its own gallery!
Closed
Good Night Scrub Hall, Morganville, QLD Closed. Camping at this small community hall near Gin Gin and Childers has officially closed. A previous committee member thanked Camps travellers for their support in booking sites over the years.
Hideaway Haven, South Bingera, Qld – This property was sold and is no longer operating as a camping spot.
Laverton Caravan Park, WA – This park has now closed. Campers tell us it has been bought by a mining company. I was unable to contact them by phone so if you have any news please pass it along to us.
