Here’s a topic I can tell you a bit about! My mum grew up in Nambucca Heads and Bowraville, so we regularly traipsed down to their cottage in Lee Street.

I loved the beach walks, there’s beach after beach – shells, too. Visit the V Wall at Nambucca Heads where the river meets the ocean and walk along the boardwalk and check out the art on the rocks.

Shelley Beach in particular is very popular but not patrolled. There’s lots of great lookouts with beautiful views up and down the coast. Bellwood Reserve very popular for young families – with BBQ areas, playground, pontoon in the river for swimming.

Macksville locals drive out to Scott’s Head to the beach. And it is a beautiful spot, I remember it well.

On the eatery front – here’s a local’s tip: in Macksville, either the Star Hotel or Macksville Chinese, and there is a new tapas place called Elk on 38.

In Nambucca Heads – try the V Wall Tavern, near the water and Lom Talay Thai. If you just want brekky or lunch then Wharf St Cafe or Boatshed Cafe both are right on the river.

The Island Golf Club at Nambucca Heads is also recommended for meals. A round of golf that is unique, this special location is on Stuart Island and linked to mainland by a causeway.

It’s crown land so you will sometimes find people fishing from the island as you play on the fairways. People are able to walk their dogs as long as they are on leash.

Another place to visit is the legendary “Pub with No Beer” 25 minutes west of Macksville, at Taylors Arm, NSW site 54 in CAMPS 10 – by donation.

Macksville Council have doubled the number of RV sites in town only recently. Check out NSW campsites 55-59 in CAMPS 10 – and NSW sites 319 and 378-383 in Caravan Parks 5.
