In March this year, the Daly River, NT experienced the biggest flood on record, causing widespread loss of property and forcing the closure of businesses in the area.
Among the hardest hit was the Mount Nancar Retreat, which suffered devastating damage with the loss of their home and property, and putting a halt to camping certainly for the remainder of the year. While the impact has been immense, there is hope that with time, rebuilding efforts and support, brighter days lie ahead. Our hearts are with them as they begin the long road to recovery.
We spoke with a number of parks and businesses along this stretch of the river, who are making steady progress and quietly rebuilding.
The Daly River Barra Resort currently has five of its eight cabins back up and running. Large areas remain covered in flood silt, but work on the campgrounds continues. They are also hoping to have their fishing charters operating again by the end of the month.
At Banyan Farm Tourist Park, recovery efforts are moving steadily forward, with contractors brought in to assist with the rebuild. Their kitchen has reopened, and like many businesses along Woolianna Road, progress is being made every day. Banyan said they hope the landscape will look very different in another month. With a fishing tournament on the horizon, they remain optimistic and hopeful of being ready.
Wooliana on the Daly is planning to reopen from 1 July.
Jess, owner of Daly River Bush Camp, (previously known as Lee & Jennys Bush Camp) said they are now in their fourth year of ownership and are hoping for a partial reopening in mid-June, as soon as road access has been restored. She also said the public boat ramp is expected to commence repairs soon.
Despite the challenges, there is a strong sense of determination among businesses along the river. They are eager to welcome visitors back and remain optimistic about the future.
With it being so quiet and very little traffic on the river, there should lots of Barrumundi once things reopen. For those considering a visit, there may be no better time to return – and every dollar spent will help support the ongoing recovery and rebuilding effort.
