Before we started the Gibb River Road, I did not realise how many safe swimming spots there were! Most of our days were spent “getting wet” at spectacular waterfalls and cool swimming holes.

I heard it was over-rated, but I loved camping at Windjana Gorge under a “Devonian Reef”, spotting crocs and hiking with the sunrise and sunset…

Mertens Gorge hosts Little Mertens Falls (pictured) and famous Mitchell Falls. We bypassed the notorious road, so far off the GRR but Overland Exposure rated their experience 10/10!
A very rocky walk in, but doable and there are upper pools to dunk in (beside the waterfall!), if you choose NOT to climb up and down to the base of Bell Gorge. We camped at the lovely Silent Grove…
