Camp, Hike and Crocs at Windjana Gorge on Western Australia’s Gibb River Road

The local ranger said Windjana Gorge has 162 freshwater crocodiles! If you are travelling the Gibb River Road it is the first national park from the west and last from east in the famed Kimberley region.

Set in the Bandilngan Windjana Gorge National Park (so no dogs) there is a generator area and “quiet” area. We are very impressed – hot showers and flushing loos! Remember you may need to BYO loo paper.

Windjana Gorge has two walks, both are best in the cool of the day – early morning or late afternoon:

  • The Savannah Trail (Class 3) 1km loop which follows the gorge wall – a Devonian reef. I had this walk all to myself this morning! I startled a lot of wallabies, read about the beautiful trees and stopped to admire the wall. Ahhh!
  • The Gorge Trail (Class 4) 1.9km return follows the riverbank with “soft sand and steep slopes” – it is here you’ll spot some crocs. The ranger suggested sundowners, and a torch. Stay until after the sun sets and you’ll see eyes light up when you flash your light across. Although some sections were tricky with my knee, I loved the “chasm” section at the start, where you walk through the rocks. There is a cool little loop at the end and the views were marvellous.
