Free camp: Legerwood Memorial Park, Tasmania

The Legerwood Memorial RV Park and Day Use areas are adjacent to each other, with electric bbq’s, picnic tables, playground, toilets, an information centre, shade, water and a cafe across the road.

Just a short detour off the Tasman Hwy, 86km north of Launceston, the Legerwood Carved Memorial trees are the centrepiece of the RV Park, they were sculpted to commemorate World War One fallen soldiers from the Dorset area.  There are 25 statues and various scenes depicting the fallen men.

The trees were originally planted in their honour but as time aged the trees were deemed unsafe, they were in danger of being felled.  The local community decided to carve the trees into the likenesses of the soldiers that you now see to protect the legacy and their memory. The condition of the park is a credit to the district and community.

There is a 24 hour limit at the RV Park, it’s a great spot, and a perfect stopover on the way to St Helens.
