If you enjoy a relaxed night of music, try to attend Australia’s largest dedicated regional music tour, Festival of Small Halls.
The 2018 Summer Tour, features Canada’s two-time JUNO Award-winner, Old Man Luedecke and local folk festival favourite, Lucy Wise.
Our town was very fortunate to host the festival for the first time last year, and it is back again in Rainbow Beach on Wednesday, December 12.
The not-for-profit tour rekindles the time-old tradition of gathering in the local small hall for a special night of live music, storytelling and community connection.
The Small Halls Summer Tour will travel to 21 town halls, from the Darling and Western Downs areas up to the lush rainforests north of Cairns before wrapping up at Woodford Folk Festival, 27 December – 1 January.
They aim to “bring in the best contemporary folk artists, who otherwise would not be able to afford touring these regions”.
Best of all, it is a great opportunity to mix with locals in any of these locations, enjoy a beverage with them, and maybe some home cooked goodies.
Artists are chosen not only because of their beautiful musicianship, but because they have the ability to really connect with people through storytelling, the ability to tell a joke, as well as real interest in visiting places a little off the beaten track.
Which is just what we found out last year. They had us laughing, as well as relating to their stories in song.
See below – there are a couple of locations in NSW, but most are in Queensland, many drought-stricken areas. Places where locals wouldn’t normally have such access to international musicians. Many also offer affordable camping options close by.
Tickets are on sale now at www.festivalofsmallhalls.com with events starting Wednesday November 21.
