Neil Hargrave Lookout, Northern Territory, is a perfect base

Photo credit: Rose Boccalatte @roseyb_11 via Instagram What is amazing about this rest area is that you are in the West MacDonnell Ranges, close to tourist icons. This route is a must-see with beautiful gorges, indigenous culture, chasm, gap, hole and pits! With a bitumen surface, there are picnic tables and a BBQ, but a patchy mobile reception. It is 24-hours only and pet friendly; BYO drinking water and firewood. You will be rewarded with beautiful views and spectacular sunsets across the Ranges and Mt Sonder. Read the plaque on Nathaniel Charles (Neil) Hargrave OBE, applauded for his work towards

Free Camping Tasmania

Petal Point – free camp at this remote Tassie Getaway

Photo credit No Boundaries Petal Point is a primitive camp situated high on an escarpment looking north across Bass Strait. Situated in the less travelled north east corner of Tasmania, we loved it because of its remoteness and panoramic views. At Petal Point, you need to be fully self-contained, take all your supplies in and take any evidence of your stay out. We settled in to the silence easily – only interruption was the ocean waves, sea breezes and the Mozart we belted out around the campfire at sunset – a luxury afforded because we were the only camping residents
