Salt Creek Rest Area, Northern Territory Salt Creek Rest Area is located conveniently between two major attractions in the Red Centre. It is 210 km north east of Uluru and 113 km from Kings Canyon, so a perfect overnighter between the two iconic destinations. And it is free and pet friendly, so it is generally busy. This shaded BBQ/picnic area is a good spot, large with lots of space and trees. There is definitely room for Big Rigs, but BYO water. And it has the CAMPS tick of approval! We certainly enjoyed our picnic here. We really made the most of the
Photo credit: Rose Boccalatte @roseyb_11 via Instagram What is amazing about this rest area is that you are in the West MacDonnell Ranges, close to tourist icons. This route is a must-see with beautiful gorges, indigenous culture, chasm, gap, hole and pits! With a bitumen surface, there are picnic tables and a BBQ, but a patchy mobile reception. It is 24-hours only and pet friendly; BYO drinking water and firewood. You will be rewarded with beautiful views and spectacular sunsets across the Ranges and Mt Sonder. Read the plaque on Nathaniel Charles (Neil) Hargrave OBE, applauded for his work towards
WWII Gorrie Airfield via Instagram: @philreit There are absolutely no facilities – but how many people can say they’ve slept on an airfield? It is suitable for big rigs and pets, camp in dry weather only – and enjoy the views! This little strip of history was the Territory’s largest aircraft service and repair base during World War II. It is hard to imagine that in late 1943, during its peak of operations, it was the base for 6,000 service personnel. Back then, staff could attend the open-air picture theatre (which seated 2000), or relax at the boxing ring, four
If you are hankering after wide open spaces, then you’ve found it. A perfect overnighter, this is a roadside rest area, but has a large area where you can get away from the road. There are lots of shady sites and plenty of room. The toilets are suitable for people with disabilities and were only upgraded last year. There’s water, a dump point, fireplaces, it is suitable for big rigs and pets, but please note it may be sandy in places and it has a 24-hour limit. All in all, a good stopover in area where there are not too
The Red Centre is internationally famous for good reason, with massive natural wonders like the Ayers Rock and the Olgas in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, the breathtaking sandstone escarpments of Kings Canyon and the contrasting extremes of the MacDonnell ranges high, dry peaks and the cool, fresh sanctuary of its low lying rock pools, this contrasting landscape has many treasures waiting for the avid explorer. The scale of this area cannot be understated, comparable in land mass to entire European countries like Albania or Slovenia, this part of the Red Centre is massive and requires serious planning. For most routes,
