As we drove towards Bollon from Dirranbandi, we popped into the Balonne Minor Bridge and decided it was our campsite for the night!
For me it was the beautiful river and riverbank, there was only a scattering of vans parked up, and it was well off the road. See the video! The boys however, loved that the mobile reception was excellent – as there was a footy game on that night.
Whilst they set up, I read my book down on the bank. We had a cracking night under the stars fireside, despite a few rodents skirting through the grass.
There are no facilities – just some fire pits and a picnic table. It is pet friendly and there is a 72 hour maximum stay. It is definitely a dry weather campground.
You’ll find the free camp about 3 km as you drive west from Dirranbandi, just before the bridge, on the right hand side. Dirranbandi also have a caravan park.
Make sure you drop into the Russian bakery, their pies (and a sausage roll for me) hit the spot. We also picked up a few sweet treats – vanilla slice and Turkish delight.
Only 64 km from Dirranbandi to Thallon (see the silos and wombat) and drive a bit further to the famous Nindigully Pub! Other nearby towns include St George and the border town of Mungindi.
In the morning, we heard our son’s stories of tapping his swag roof to hear mice ‘plop’ onto the ground. Glad I was in the van!
