QLD Cunningham Highway (The Pocket Reserve)
Free Camping Queensland

Cunningham Highway (The Pocket) Reserve, Queensland

Cunningham Highway (The Pocket) Reserve is free, pet friendly with a bonus of water views and birdlife. It was our first night camping of our Outback Queensland trip, and we were on route to Cloncurry – via Goondiwindi, Carnarvon Gorge, Winton, Longreach, and more. Our youngest, a 15-year-old, was watching a footy game – as he was in our local footy tipping comp. We turned off the highway, and as we drove a couple of hundred metres down to the water, he and his brother squealed – it’s SOS only, Dad. They were talking about their mobile range. Of course,

Proposed Tin Can Bay freedom RV park moved out of town

Great that a new freedom RV site is planned for Tin Can Bay, Queensland BUT the draft presented to Gympie Regional Council late last year proposed the more convenient site as the Depot off Coral Trout Drive (pictured). Council officers said it was visible, not used for any other purpose, was not in proximity of houses and only 200m to shops. We did a site visit and noted it was a large flat area, also in walking distance to Tin Can Bay Inlet. The local councillor suggested there was the potential for misuse and compliance issues and a larger site

Free camp oasis at Leichhardt Falls, Queensland - Image Julie Holt

Free camp oasis at Leichhardt Falls, Queensland

This is a very popular and scenic stop along the Queensland Gulf section of the Savannah Way. Best for self contained vehicles as there are no facilities – it is free and pet friendly. Make sure you leave no trace when you leave. The rocky plateaus and water provide great photo opportunities and exploring. Water levels will vary depending on the season. Julie Holt sent in these photos and told us, “The birdlife was amazing. The birds and wildlife were so natural, even though the cockatoos were noisy. Lucky for me I could take my hearing aids out to sleep!”

FREE camp: Eromanga Hall, Queensland

Dinosaurs, pub down the road, a welcome hot shower and beautiful western sunset – no wonder we loved our time in Eromanga. Eromanga’s town claim is threefold: the furthest town from the sea, the only independently owned oil refinery in the country AND Australia’s largest dinosaur! It is also on Queensland’s Natural Sciences Loop. We rate the wonderful free overnight camp – complete with excellent showers, toilets and playground. And it is pet friendly, with room for Big Rigs, shade and mobile reception! Driving in from Noccundra, and plenty of water crossings, Eromanga was muddy. We were first at Hall, so had the

Dickabram bridge Miva QLD
Camping

Stop at the historic Dickabram Bridge, Miva, Queensland

You can see why it is a whole lot of water if the Mary River is close to the road above, as it was early January, 2022! 1893 was when the Mary River covered the bridge. In 1955 water splashed through the decking. The bridge stands 23 metres above the river! It is a little noisy crossing the historic Dickabram Bridge, Miva – not far from Theebine Hotel in the Gympie region. After lunch at the pub, we stopped at the bridge’s rest area for the night. And it is also noisy camping next to it. It does sound like

Dirranbandi Balonne Minor Bridge Camp Site

Free camp riverside at Balonne Minor Bridge, Dirranbandi, Queensland

As we drove towards Bollon from Dirranbandi, we popped into the Balonne Minor Bridge and decided it was our campsite for the night!  For me it was the beautiful river and riverbank, there was only a scattering of vans parked up, and it was well off the road. See the video! The boys however, loved that the mobile reception was excellent – as there was a footy game on that night. Whilst they set up, I read my book down on the bank. We had a cracking night under the stars fireside, despite a few rodents skirting through the grass.
