The days are stretching out, the wildflowers are up, and the roads are calling. There is no better time of year to point the rig somewhere new before the summer crowds arrive.
This issue is all about you. We asked where you love to travel, and the tips came in from the Victorian hills to the Queensland coast and the banks of the Murray. Here are six favourites to get you dreaming, and a few honest words of wisdom from fellow travellers along the way.
Railton Win
The Railton Hotel dropped its camp fees from $15 to $10 a head, hot shower token included, for travellers doing the Tassie loop.
Dandenongs
Lyn’s pick: cool gum forests, quaint villages and the famous Puffing Billy steam train, a perfect spring weekend out of Melbourne, Victoria.
Lyn’s tip: the Dandenong Ranges, Victoria
“I live at the foothills of The Dandenong Ranges, Victoria in Upper Ferntree Gully which has the 1000 steps, Lyrebird track and Kokoda memorial trail. Sassafras is a village of quaint shops to browse and Miss Marples Tea house. Belgrave has the famous Puffing Billy narrow gauge railway which runs to Gembrook. There are some lovely drives through tall gum tree forests and great little towns scattered throughout the hills. Further across is the Yarra Valley which is beautiful.”
Walker Flat
Heather’s SA pick: a peaceful stretch of the Murray with an easy run into Mannum for supplies and a coffee.
Bargara, Qld
Deb’s pick: warm coastal weather, whales offshore and the famous Mon Repos turtles, a cracking spring destination.
Deb’s coast: “Bargara Qld … lots of great cafe’s and eateries … whale watching, turtle encounters at Mon Repos … Lady Musgrave island and Llady Elliott Island… Bundaberg Rum and Kalkie Moon Gin Distilleries beautiful weather and much more…”
