The Tilpa Hotel on the Darling River Run has been there since 1894, and now it’s counting on travellers like you to come and camp the night.
New publicans, Stacy and Kristal asked us if we could get the word out so they can welcome you to their hotel, which is considered one of the true bush pubs still standing in Australia.
Stacy puts it simply: “There’s not a lot going on tourism-wise out here, and the media hasn’t helped with all the negativity about fuel, availability, and prices. We have plenty of fuel, I even purchase the petrol myself. The roads are all open, so come on out.”
“The more travellers who make it out this way, the better,” he says. “This is just a nice little spot, and people are really enjoying coming here.” The siblings have kept everything that makes it special – including THAT wall.
I asked Stacy why they bought the Tilpa Pub? “I grew up in the district, visiting the pub since I was little.” He knows very well how important this hotel is to the community. “The opportunity came up to buy the pub, so we jumped at it!”
Then what a tale he had when I asked if he had worked with his sister before…
“You are not going to believe this. I didn’t know I had a sibling. I told my father once, I wish I had a sister or brother. He said, ‘Sit here.’ He told me this story about this girl. Anyway, I’d never met her until I was about 21. We met at the airport, and then we caught up with each other more and more over the years, but never spent much time together.
“Originally I was going into the pub myself, and I thought I needed someone that can help me and actually be there for me. I rang Kris, who was living in Adelaide at the time. I was like, ‘I’m just going into a pub. Would you be interested in coming in with me?’ It was two weeks. She had everything packed up, the dogs, the whole bloody house, and she moved out to Tilpa and fell in love with it.”

Where is Tilpa, and Why You Need to Stop Here
Tilpa is a tiny outback town on the banks of the Darling River in far western New South Wales, sitting right on the famous Darling River Run. It’s one of those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it places that we loved!
The pub has been part of the landscape since 1894, starting out as a watering hole for riverboat traders and shearers.
Free Camping at Tilpa Flats – Right on the Darling River
Free camping is available at Tilpa Flats, just 500 metres from the Darling River – right across the road from the pub. And it’s genuinely free, with showers for a donation, toilets, and it’s dog friendly.
Stacy said, “Our pub staff look after the camp area – they empty the bins and keep the bathrooms clean.”
Accommodation is also available at the hotel itself, but book ahead as it is limited.
If you want to get even closer to the water, you can camp 6 km east at Tilpa Weir on the river itself.
The Food, the Beer Garden, and Why We Ordered Twice
We came for lunch. The food was so good, we came back for dinner.
Coffee is available daily, lunch runs 12pm to 2pm, and dinner from 6pm to 8pm, every day. Bar snacks are available throughout the day, and the Joker Draw every Saturday night adds a bit of local fun to the mix.
Eat in the dining room, at the undercover beer garden with the Darling behind you, or the front verandah – which is where you want to be for sunset. We met fellow travellers while having a pre-dinner drink, watching the western sky.
130 Years of Outback History – and a Cemetery With No Residents
Tilpa comes from Thulpa, which is the Baarkindji language, meaning flood waters.
Find the shortest heritage trail in Australia – but go and read the signage! You’ll learn about drunks, goat and galah menu items, explorers, the riverboat era and the shearers who shaped this part of the country.
One of our travellers told us that opposite the pub is a memorial to Breaker Morant. I totally missed it! They thought it might be the only memorial to him in Australia.
Side note: Before becoming known for his service in the Boer War, Harry (Breaker) Morant worked as a stockman around Tilpa. The 1979 movie is excellent, with an all star cast. Here’s a preview on ABC iview.
Sign the pub wall (for a gold coin donation to the Royal Flying Doctors). Stacy is very proud that the pub donates to the Royal Flying Doctors. It’s an essential service out here. He mentioned there’s been quite a few evacuations over the years. The fundraiser is so popular, the only issue is finding a spot on the wall!
And for those who love a quirky outback fact – no one has ever been buried in the Tilpa cemetery. “The cemetery is not well known. I have no idea why it is empty,” admitted Stacy.
