I couldn’t believe that we had never heard of the painted desert before we took our across the Centre road trip.
This is a road that is seriously underrated. If you have a four-wheel-drive and you’re travelling near Oodnadatta, Coober Pedy or Cagney Park in South Australia, take that turn.
This little roadtrip is one that we definitely recommend. The road quality conditions can vary – and some of the road goes through some very sandy creek beds. However, the views make it so well worth it.
Lookout
You can stop off at the lookout and you get such a beautiful Vista ahead of you of all those colours that you’ll see in the painted desert itself.
Hike
Also a bit further and there is a short hike that you can take and you can climb up one of the little hills in the painted Desert there the road that the track itself is pretty good. There is one very slippery section but if you can get through that it’s quite a good level hike over the hills.
History
The painted desert was formed over 80 million years ago, these desert breakaways are rich in colours and contrast!
