Another day… another cracking camp on the Murray River! Nyah Rec Reserve is a pet-friendly, donation camping site. The town even has a Ned Kelly connection.
But seriously, how often do you get to camp by a river AND watch AFL? Training was on, so we had the benefit of both.
And not just any river – see how beautiful the Murray River is, with the sporting ground floodlights on it!
Camp fires are allowed so long as they are above ground. A friendly volunteer, Geoff, stopped in to say hello. Council maintains the grounds, run by the Lions Club.
After the Harness Club left (after 50 years here) the community opened it up to RV campers. You’ll see the memorial gates, roses and mural from days gone by.
I loved his local tips! He was proud to say another traveller told him it was the BEST Chinese food at the Oasis servo in his whole trip. The chef is from Melbourne. Geoff also shared a local map.
I told Geoff I walked the towpath (or along the levee) and checked out the painted poles and carved statues in the day use area. To be sure, he was a handy person to ask about the sculptures: turns out, they are his wife’s family! Her grandfather is rumoured to have crafted the bushranger, Ned Kelly’s notorious helmet. Meanwhile, her father was the first to grow grapes in the region.
Donate behind the dump point. There are four areas you can camp in and though it was a little wet for us, there were mostly grassy sites and plenty of shade.
Did I mention the clean toilets? It looks like locals love the facility too – for dog walking and enjoying the river.
This is the perfect spot for kids! The family parked next to us had their first ever night in their camper trailer. They especially loved the racetrack, a lovely old playground and the netball courts to play on, too.
By the way, tents are ok if they are with an RV. No wonder this site was recommended to us! We’re giving it a new red tick. Find out more in your Camps App and guides.
