Glen Helen Gorge is a perfect place to have a dip in the sandstone cliffs and watch the light change on Mount Sonder. This road trip through the spectacular West MacDonnell Ranges has so many highlights – more gorges, Ochre Pits, Ellery Creek Big Hole, Stanley Chasm and Simpsons Gap.

Nearby this beautiful waterhole, there are two locations listed close by – one in each book we produce:

Glen Helen Homestead

NT site 44 in Caravan Parks 5

This caravan park on the Finke River is only a 5-10 minute walk to Glen Helen Gorge – please note we have just been advised it is no longer pet friendly (so update your books!).

There are 25 motel rooms and an expansive campground. The property also has a popular local restaurant, bar/bistro, swimming pool and general store. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is available, and there is a cafe with coffee and cakes etc outside service times.

Only guests can access the pool, showers are available for a nominal charge if you aren’t staying overnight. There are also designated facilities for groups and events.

Optus 4G network is available. There is limited and capped free wifi, at the homestead.

The history of the station dates back to 1905, it opened to tourists in 1954. Fire destroyed the complex in 1985, and after several owners – last year it changed operations with the Ngurratjuta/Pmara Ntjarra Aboriginal Corporation.

Two Mile

This popular National Park, budget priced site on the Finke River is close to Glen Helen Gorge in the spectacular West MacDonnell Ranges. Have a dip in the sandstone gorge, watch the light change on Mt Sonder.

Beautiful trees to park by, and watch the dingoes (put our food and rubbish away for night time)! This riverside spot is very peaceful and great for stargazing and birdwatching. Note – this site is also not pet friendly, there are fire pits, shade and it is dry weather only – be cautious closer to the river as it can be boggy.

A good spot to base yourself to see so many highlights – more gorges, Ochre Pits, Ellery Creek big Hole, Stanley Chasm and Simpsons Gap.

You can walk to Glen Helen Lodge’s restaurant, bar/bistro and general store. Showers are available for a nominal charge.
