An iconic stop we think belongs on any Aussie bucket list is the lesser known Porcupine Gorge near Hughenden in Queensland.
We managed the road from Hughenden easily with our caravan – it is 75 km north of the town on a fully sealed road. There is a short cut to Prairie, via a dirt road.
This is a special national park and the site is aptly names the Pyramid Campground. You’ll see why when you venture down the MANY steps into the canyon below.
Bring a picnic, we didn’t but you could have spent all day swimming (chilly!) and birdwatching, or exploring all over the “holes” of rock and Porcupine Creek.
On the way there, check out the lookouts and historical sites.
Our first stop, after arrival, was a short walk to the lookout and the gorge below. Super impressive!
No pets or reception, Big Rigs okay – there are toilets, fire pits and picnic tables.
And, being a national park campground it is budget priced – but do book ahead. Especially in peak periods, it is one landmark you won’t want to miss!
