The closest free camps are the rest areas around Gympie, about 90 minutes inland. In town it is caravan parks, and out on the Cooloola sand it is a Queensland national park permit. Rainbow Beach Holiday Village is as close as you get, right in town and a short walk to the surf. BIG4 Breeze is the better value of the two in town, and it takes dogs. We note access for every site we check, so you know before you commit the van down a narrow track.
How long can you stay at camps near Rainbow Beach?
Time limits vary by site. The caravan parks take longer stays. Poverty Point is national park camping, so book a permit and check the current stay limits before you go. Because we personally check each site, you’ll know before you set up whether it’s a one-night stop or somewhere to settle in for a few days. Councils do change limits, so always follow the signs on site.

Both caravan parks have powered sites, toilets and showers. Poverty Point has none of that. Poverty Point is the one for four wheel drivers, out in the Great Sandy National Park with a boat ramp and no toilets. The two caravan parks in town both have powered sites, toilets and showers, and both are within walking distance of the beach. Poverty Point is the opposite: no toilets, four wheel drive access and a boat ramp, out in the national park. Come fully self contained for that one, and book the permit first.
