Free camping sites in West Coast Tasmania

Free Camping ……. and caravanning is one of the more rewarding ways to explore and experience a place. This is especially true in a country like Australia, famous for the great outdoors.

There are plenty of campsites tucked away – but if you don’t know where they are you can easily miss them. People often assume that it won’t be difficult to find a place to stopover on a budget but soon discover it can be a lot more expensive than anticipated. Or worse, they can’t find somewhere to stop and continue driving when they are tired.

These “free camping” sites include rest areas, picnic areas, parklands or parking areas next to a business. You can also stay for free at some hotels, state forests or RV Parks – we even come across free caravan parks!

Some would only be suitable for a brief overnighter on your journey and may have a maximum time limit. Others are next to pools or rivers, with toilets and you are welcome to bring along your pets and stay for longer.

Generally, less pricey means less facilities. However, we list free camps with pools, showers, playgrounds, near boat ramps and wonderful views. Some are close to world class destinations, and Aussie icons.

Just use the symbols or the filters to find them in our comprehensive guide books and Camps Australia Wide App!

Here’s a preview of campsites and caravan parks we have found with 30 years of research! Happy camping…

TAS Mayfield Bay

Beachfront at free camp, Mayfield Bay, Tasmania

If you are looking for scenery, this is your spot. There’s good camping, fishing, swimming, surfing and diving, as well as wonderful views across Great Oyster Bay to Freycinet Peninsula. Disabled toilets, shady trees, fireplaces, mobile phone coverage are available, and pets are allowed. BYO drinking water, gold coin donation and camera! Enjoy the absolute beachfront. There’s history, too. Photo credit @ozzyprideozzywide via Instagram Further north is Spiky Bridge, built in the 1840s by a convict road gang. Local fieldstones were placed vertically, giving a spiky appearance. Perhaps it was to stop cattle falling over the sides? You can also

Tullah Lakeside Lodge

2 new Pubstays in Tassie

Today we listed two new campsites at beautiful Tullah in Tasmania. Both are pubstays and within close proximity to each other. Tullah Lakeside Lodge This pub stay is right on the banks of Lake Rosebery. They offer camping for Caravans, RVs and camper trailers, with power, water and shared amenities. However, the base is hard gravel. This means you won’t pitch a tent here, but you can always stay in the lodge just for the serenity and views. Camping is $25 for a couple for the night and there is a free area for self-contained RVs. You’ll be stunned with

TAS Petal Point Our Camp - Photo credit No Boundaries

Petal Point – free camp at this remote Tassie Getaway

Photo credit No Boundaries Petal Point is a primitive camp situated high on an escarpment looking north across Bass Strait. Situated in the less travelled north east corner of Tasmania, we loved it because of its remoteness and panoramic views. At Petal Point, you need to be fully self-contained, take all your supplies in and take any evidence of your stay out. We settled in to the silence easily – only interruption was the ocean waves, sea breezes and the Mozart we belted out around the campfire at sunset – a luxury afforded because we were the only camping residents

Scottsdale Northeast Park, Tasmania is a freedom favourite

The Scottsdale Northeast Park was so busy, I dropped in to see why it was so popular over the Australia Day weekend. I said hello to a great couple from Gippsland, Ron and  Lee Harwood. I caught them enjoying a breakfast of pancakes and local blueberries. Along with another camper Joy Bradford we happily chatted for ages, enjoying the morning sunshine. They all agreed that Northeast Park was one of their favourite campspots and it’s easy to see why. You can’t immediately tell how pretty this campground is from the road. It’s situated on the Tasman Highway, and within walking
