Chris Shepherd is a volunteer who helps administer Eumungerie Recreation Reserve (NSW no. 826 in CAMPS 9), between Dubbo and Gilgandra.
The camp has toilets, cold showers, powered sites, BBQ, and it is pet friendly. There is a fire bin and they even provide firewood for free. There is no longer a dirt road to the entrance.
Community run, Chris said they aim just to cover costs. “It is $5 a site, and $5 for power. People say, ‘you’re too cheap!'”
The land is crown reserve. When the sporting club folded, Chris explained that camping was pitched as a use of the land.
“It is amazing the extra traffic, last financial year we doubled numbers, and this year we doubled that again!
“The increase to the post office and pub is an enormous amount of trade. The hotel is only 200 metres away from the grounds. On average they have 7-8 campers there each night for an evening meal, and 20-30 for the weekly roast! It’s a huge boost.
Chris was unsure as why the site was proving so popular wiht travellers, but did say, “Our full time caretakers there are brilliant, they are getting great reviews.”
He was also grateful to us for the exposure, “More than half of our visitors have the CAMPS book – some go back to previous versions.”
