Why we loved our time in Walgett Town

We were so impressed with this country town, we doubled our stay to two nights in Walgett NSW!

Camped at Alex Trevallion Park – a top freedom camp where we cooked up scones, chatted with other travellers by the “pond”. Showered in new facilities (thank you council), we also could walk to town.

This pet friendly camp has two large parking areas and a large grassed area with trees. Plus, our first encounter with black cockatoos on our Darling River Run!

Banjo Patterson’s poetry is on a rock here – “Been There Before” mentions “Walgett Town”.

The cool coffee/gift shop has been named after “Stone’s Throw”. They have really yummy hot chocolates and Heatley rates their coffee – we stopped in more than once for a muffin or brekky! (I also picked up a warm plaid shirt, which came in handy this “south for the winter” trip.)

The Fishing/Camping/Newsagent is a friendly shop, you can pick up some Darrell Lea chocolate, Samboy chips or a gun! They also sell CAMPS guides, and Heatley purchased a camp oven.

We also walked up to the Namoi River, checked out Jimmy Little painted on a water tower next to the YMCA – but didn’t try meals at the sports Club or pub – next time.

You can also camp at the:

  • Showgrounds – where power is available for camping. There is a fee, it’s a bitumen area, on the outskirts of town but closer to the river.
  • Muddy Waters – farmstay on the Barwon River. Road and campground was for dry conditions only. Also camp beside the dam or closer to the house for power. Family run business also sell pumpkins and other vege! Thanks Luke.
