Chatting to campers, Possum Park is often recommended to us. Not realising, that there are two campsites with that name.

Both are in Queensland and they are only about 200 km apart. To avoid any confusion, here’s the rundown on both…

Possum Park Camping (Miles)

Privately owned for over 36 years, Possum Park Camping is the perfect spot to relax on your way out west – with interesting history! It is located only 20 km north of Miles on the Leichhardt Highway, or 360 km from Brisbane.

Campers are well catered for with full caravan park amenities, all drive-through sites and a caretaker on-hand. Unpowered sites are only $10 per person per night, and powered sites are reasonably priced too.

They also have a poem:

“If you’re travelling out west along Leichhardt’s Track,
Or want to avoid a heart attack,
Then get away from the old rat race,
To Possum Park at Miles… a peaceful place.”

Whilst peace and quiet are arguably the best offering at Possum Park, it also has an unusual history.

During WWII, it was a ‘top secret’ bomb and ammunition dump, the largest and last on the Brisbane line of defence against a feared Japanese invasion.

Consequently, there are 16 bunkers that can be viewed on a 3.5 km walk around the site, as well as old train carriages which have been converted to accommodation. Also, a TAA airplane which is in the process of being converted into self contained accommodation.

Julie asks you to arrive before dark, as the park is 1 km from the office. For bookings, call Possum Park Camping directly – find all the info you need in the CAMPS App and guides.

Possum Park (Injune)

Heatley and I were really impressed with the community operated camp! You’ll find 72 hour budget camping available at Possum Park, Injune, which is only 90 km north of Roma.

Pet-friendly and clean amenities, campers have the option of powered ($20) and unpowered sites ($10). Fees can be paid at the Visitor Centre or to the onsite caretaker.

History

Possum Park obtained its name from an elusive resident possum that lives in the ceiling of the main building, but is rarely sighted!

Injune has recently celebrated its 100 year anniversary as a town, since its origin as a camp at the end of the railway line.

Visitors can explore the local train station, Lagoon Walk and the Characters of Injune, which are a series of metal statues and their stories of local identities.

The National Parks of Nuga Nuga and Carnarvon are slightly further afield, with Carnarvon Gorge approximately 157 km north.

The Dingo Fence at Injune QLD

We drove out to the Dingo Fence – on Womblebank Gap Road, towards the Mt Moffat section of the national park. It is amazingly, the longest fence in the world. This barrier is a whopping 5300 km long! It spans from the Nullarbor Cliffs through Cameron Corner to Jimbour in Queensland’s Darling Downs.

Kylie from the Injune Visitor Centre advised that arrival at Possum Park is anytime, the site is not gated. The 72 hour limit is negotiable.

Possum Park sites are not able to be booked. For more information, see the CAMPS App or guides.

So you can see, if you’re wondering which Possum Park should I put on my list? The answer is both!
