Buckland Valley Road has ten free camps out on this beautiful river, near Porepunkah. Just off the Great Alpine Road, it is a pretty part of the world, and one we return to again and again!
All these campgrounds are pet friendly and three are new listings. There is also a national park site at the end, Beveridge Station, no pets.
After 16 km in, the dirt road begins, and true it was worse the further you travel! Most of these sites have toilets.
To keep sites like these operating, please do respect the land and leave no trace. Here they are, in order of distance from Porepunkah:
1. Ah Young
A long area, we didn’t see easy access to the water, but it is a pleasant site with history on the area in signage.
2. Camp Flat
Stop at one of two areas before and a larger area after an easy river crossing.
3. Clear Creek (4WD only)
This new listing has a steep descent, better suited to roof top tents and tents.
4. Shippens Flat
This site has flat, open areas for camping and shade road excellent access, above the river.
5. New Chum Flat
Another new area – wonderful to see!
6. Leinster
Lovely river views here, the site is more sloped in areas than some others. Great shade!
7. Good Hope Flat
A very long, large, extends quite a way along the river. There is good access to river.
8. Headrace
Choose from plenty of sites at this level campground.
9. Yurluk
Only opening in April, toilets were being built when we visited!
10. The Bend
Beautiful spot – great river views and access. This site has less clearings, but stunning, grassy sites.
