South Australia is known for its long summers, wine, sparkling beaches and outback sites such as Coober Pedy. If you are planning on going on a road trip through the state you will also find a range of historical sites and townships.

There are plenty of free campsites in SA where you can take a much needed rest, explore and recharge for the next leg of your journey. Below are just a few that you might like to add to your itinerary.

Worlds End Gorge Campground

As a favourite SA camping ground you can expect a lot of company here during holiday periods. The large gum trees provide lots of shade and the nearby creek is great for your family to have a go at yabbying or just to relax. There is plenty of room for everyone and, although the area is an open paddock, chances are you will be able to set up away from others if you want some privacy. Facilities are limited and you will need to bring your own drinking water.

Terowie Railway Yard

Terowie, South Australia, is a township rich with historical significance and interesting sites. The area has a large number of untouched 19th Century buildings that are both charming and intriguing for visitors. Main Street is lined with historical buildings that make you feel like you have gone back in time and signs around the old railway yards and throughout the town provide you with information about them. If you want you can even get keys from the Cafe to see some of the historical displays in the buildings. The camp site is mostly open with no shade but the grass is flat there is plenty of space. Although it’s a quiet town the locals are very friendly.

Murtho Forest Landing

Murtho Forest

Located 10 minutes from Paringa, this camping spot offers shade and great camping on the banks of the Murray River. There is a beautiful lookout close by and also a lot of decent fishing spots along the banks where campers are known to catch Callop, Carp, Yabbies and Golden Perch. If you go walk about you will most likely see a variety of wildlife such as pelicans, wrens, kangaroos and rosellas. In the warmer months you might even come across a snake, so keep an eye out to make sure you don’t get an unpleasant surprise. Don’t miss the lookout just outside the entrance – it has a beautiful view of the red hills and river.

Kingston SE Jetty

Kingston SE Jetty Parking Area, SA, is a spacious site located right next to the sea. There is plenty of room for people to go fishing on the long jetty and a BBQ and picnic area where you can fry your catch. If you come up empty handed there is always the pubs and fish & chip shop closeby. Unfortunately this camp site only allows self cotnained vehicles, so if you are camping in a tent you will need to look elsewhere. The fresh sea air and kind locals make the stay very pleasant.
