7 things I didn’t know about the Melbourne Cup

Our Melbourne Cup is held at Flemington Racecourse on the first Tuesday of November. Here’s what we didn’t know about the Race that Stops the Nation: Without an exception, everyone was so friendly. Every queue (and there will be a few queues), all in our finery, people were excited to be there and smiling. From our seat near the finish line, waiting for lunch, or champagne – even in the Ladies – people were happy to chat. Who knew, that our National Anthem could be so stirring at a horse race. The atmosphere was electric, like a soccer game in Italy!

Beautiful Banksia Bluff Campground, Cape Conran National Park, Victoria

Banksia Bluff Campground, Cape Conran Coastal Park VIC We loved exploring Cape Conran National Park in Victoria’s East Gippsland region. Banksia Bluff is one of those rare PARKS campgrounds where dogs are allowed. In fact, there is a mixture of unpowered dog friendly and non-dog friendly campsites. Dogs must be on a lead. The popular campground has 135 sites spread out over a kilometre, set amongst mahogany gum and banksia woodland. Campfires are permitted on selected sites and must be within a fire ring. Flushing toilets and an outdoor cold shower is available. All sites have some shade and are generally large. Toilets are

Free camp at the Plough Inn, Victoria

Who else loves a free camp behind a pub? This one is located in Tarrawingee, about 14km from Wangaratta in Victoria and recommended by our CAMPS Ambassadors, Tracey and Dale from Adams Family Travels… There is plenty of room for self contained RVs with green grass and some shade.  The beer garden is a great place to sit in the afternoon and enjoy a drink or two.  There is also a playground for the kids and dogs are welcome on a leash. Highly recommend you book ahead as it is quite often fully booked out. When you arrive, you need

Changes to Murray River FREE camping near Yarrawonga, Victoria

Forges Beach – Victoria Vic Parks have recently made some big changes to the camping options along the Murray River, consolidating many state forest, wildlife reserves, conservation areas and town commons under the umbrella of the National Parks system. This has cleared up a lot of confusion about who controls what, where to book and where to find the info you need to plan your trip. With roughly 2000km of river frontage in Victoria, you can only imagine the scale of the task placed upon Parks to achieve this outcome and we thank them for their hard work. This process

3 Murray River free camps near Walwa, Victoria

Burrowye Bend, Victoria – image Christina Walters Christina Walters from our Facebook Group I Love Camping Australia Wide said Burrowye Bend was a “Gorgeous spot on the river, not far to Walwa, Vic, for essentials.. love it!” She said Gadds Bend was a few kilometres further along towards Walwa and Jingellic. Both are pet friendly.  Gadds Bend free camps – image Christina Walters Plus gave the tip that Jingellic had a great pub, with free, pet-friendly camping along the river below it, at Jingellic Reserve. High country free camp: Victoria Falls, Victoria

If you are looking for a pretty waterfall, then check out some of our camps beside waterfalls. Victoria Falls Campground is known more as a historical area rather than a waterfall – it was the site of Victoria’s first hydro electricity scheme. The history is interesting, but infrastructure was removed – just some concrete remains. Instead, park up and enjoy the serenity! This camp area has enough going for it, to visit in its own right. It has a beautiful little creek (see our video below) and bridge with picnic area, barbeques and toilet alongside.  Plus you can bring your pets,
