Pet friendly camp near a waterfall at Woods Reserve, Australian Capital Territory

We love camps near waterfalls! On a recent winter visit to the Australian Capital Territory, I was able to scope out some campsites.  From Woods Reserve, you can walk or drive upstream to the magnificent Gibraltar Falls. It’s only 30 or so km from Canberra. It is named after the first Europeans to settle in the area. The camp is near Namadgi National Park – with toilets, showers, picnic tables, shade, wood BBQs and a 14 day limit. It is a pretty drive out here, not far from the Brindabellas. A favourite of our Canberra family, it certainly is a

New owners keeping old traditions alive at Standown Park, near Gympie, Queensland

Congratulations Russell, Natasha, Sophie, Lottie and Megan, the new owners of Standown Park! This little oasis between Gympie and Tin Can Bay has always welcomed current and past serving members of the Defence Forces, first responders and caravan clubs.  Previous owners, Rod and Pam named the park “Standown” – a military term for rest and relax. They spent 18 years here, just a bare block with pumpkins and watermelons growing and a shed, and created this little piece of paradise, beside the pond and forestry. They also initiated ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day events – and with Vietnam Veterans’ Day coming

Perth’s best camping secret: Carmel Cider Co, Western Australia

You know what they say about an apple a day! Carmel Cider Co Camp is our Ambassador Daniel’s happy place and Perth’s best kept camping secret – where you can camp amongst the apple trees or in the paddock and have a cidery down the driveway! It is just $20 a night, per vehicle, for an unpowered site. Ambassador Manda says the owners are lovely and there are toilets on site too (no showers or power) and it is only 25 minutes from Perth! There are minimal facilities, a dam for kayaking / swimming, cidery open for sales and tasting.

NEW CAMP: Hidden Camp at Pie Creek, Gympie, Queensland

Our latest listing is a favourite with campers. Tucked away just 10 minutes west of Gympie you’ll find Hidden Camp at Pie Creek, a 6.5 acre property where you can get back to nature. The perfect destination … close to most things but still away from everything! Families will love it here, you can bring the kids, dog, push bikes and canoe. Enjoy a campfire in season in the fire pits provided and there’s plenty of firewood available. The camp offers a pretty view, there’s a camp kitchen and bar setup near the dam, with lights, barbeque, fridge/freezer and some

NEW camp: Berringa Farmstay, near Ballarat, Victoria

If you are looking for wide open spaces, and you are self contained, visit George and Rachael at Berringa Farmstay, Victoria. Camp within the pine trees with your own private fire pit – or closer to the house. Power and water are available for an extra fee. Pet friendly, there are only 5 sites across 5 acres, so it is very family friendly for bike riding and games. For animal lovers, look out for kookaburras, rosellas, magpies, black cockatoos and echidnas. Plus kids will love to meet the sheep, geese, chickens and ducks! And there are yabbies in the dam.

Camp at Patchewollock Hotel, Victoria

Established after the First World War, Patchewollock is a small town in North-West Victoria with a population of less than 200. Located 41 km SW of Ouyen or 49 km N of Hopetoun, “Patche” is home to an amazing silo art piece by Brisbane-based street artist Fintan Magee, sometimes referred to as the ‘Australia’s Banksy’. The giant mural depicts local sheep and grain farmer, Nick ‘Noodle’ Hulland, chosen for his ‘classic farmer looks’ and his strong connection to the farming community. Patchewollock Caravan Park (formerly Patche Sunset Retreat) has closed! However you can still camp there, it is now called

2 free pet friendly Murray River camps at Walker Flat, South Australia

I really did walk 9km to see these two FREE Murray River camps at Walkers Flat, SA! Then we floated past in the paddleboat. Turns out, Walker Flat is a protected section of the river. Big paddleboats (and we were holidaying in the biggest in the southern hemisphere – the Murray Princess) don’t fare too well with winds and the forecast wasn’t great. However, walks were an option – so off my sister and I explored with the CAMPS AUSTRALIA WIDE App and CAMPS Pendium. Hettner Landing  You’ll drive past Lake Bywater to get to this camp. Swans were out

QLD Cunningham Highway (The Pocket Reserve)

Cunningham Highway (The Pocket) Reserve, Queensland

Cunningham Highway (The Pocket) Reserve is free, pet friendly with a bonus of water views and birdlife. It was our first night camping of our Outback Queensland trip, and we were on route to Cloncurry – via Goondiwindi, Carnarvon Gorge, Winton, Longreach, and more. Our youngest, a 15-year-old, was watching a footy game – as he was in our local footy tipping comp. We turned off the highway, and as we drove a couple of hundred metres down to the water, he and his brother squealed – it’s SOS only, Dad. They were talking about their mobile range. Of course,

Budget and waterside camp: Second Creek Beach, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia

Our ambassadors Manda and Daniel thought this was a great small camp. There was only room for three or four sites. It is a flat site and there is a boat ramp (with 4WD access) and toilets, too! Payment is available onsite with an honesty box, but there are no bookings. You can swim, fish and bring your pet. There is a low ocean swell here because of the Islands of the Sir Joseph Banks Group, so no need to bring a surfboard! The camp is located south of Tumby Bay, on the eastern side of the beautiful Eyre Peninsula. What to see
