If you like a little thrill, visit The Blue Mountains and the Katoomba Scenic World. The world’s steepest railway is west of Sydney, in New South Wales.
Here’s a great little campground we had not heard anyone tell us about – budget priced and it comes with an interesting name and a hike to dizzying heights.
Although this free site is overnight only, it has so much else going for it. Mother of Ducks Lagoon is located in Guyra, New South Wales.
Here’s one that ticks all the boxes, the Bucketts Way Camp n Stay, a brand new campsite just off the Pacific Highway north of Newcastle. This quiet bush setting is deceptive to say the least, unpowered camping but with all the trimmings. Three years in the making, friendly owners Brad and Carolyn created this beauty on 25 acres of natural bushland. It has huge private level campsites around around 10 x 20 metres per site, so no need to unhook and privacy galore. Despite being only 470 metres off the highway there’s no traffic noise amongst all the shady gums.

We also made the starting point as Brisbane. So here it is: DAY 1 Brisbane to Koreelah Creek Camp, NSW (no pets) – 108km Koreelah Creek Camp, NSW Take in Queensland’s Scenic Rim – we had a fantastic lunch at Harrisville’s Royal Hotel (a free camp), picked up fresh vege at Kalbar and drove past Lake Moogerah. (Extra night? Stop here at the caravan park or The Gorge near Aratula.)
Every site is waterfront at Platypus Flat, Nymboida-Binderay National Park, near Dorrigo Just one week of camping in north eastern New South Wales we checked out over 20 waterside campsites and many others! Add to that: 5 waterfalls, 8 national parks, 8 pubs and a following the mighty Clarence and Belliger, lulled to sleep on Nymboida’s rapids, with swims in the Gwydir and Bielsdown Rivers, plus Reedy and Never Never Creeks. Red ticks are the CAMPS seal of approval. It means: at the time they were visited, they were appealing, either because of the site’s position or vista or because facilities
