Bucket List Oasis in New South Wales – Menindee Lakes

Kim Murphy sent us this photo of Lake Menindee Just like everyone wants to see the miraculous occasion when South Australia’s Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park has water in it, Menindee Lakes is another outback oasis – but timing must be right! Described as naturally ephemeral, the inter-connected lakes are normally dry, unless there has been adequate rain. They were modified during the 1950s and 1960s for water storage to nearby Broken Hill, as well as towns and farms in the Murray–Darling system. So when there is water in them – travellers flock to the great camping spots you’ll find

Bushwalk and camp near Finch Hatton Gorge, Eungella National Park, Mackay Region, Queensland

Image by Naomi Cole In the heat of a Mackay summer, you can cool down at Finch Hatton Gorge. Follow the Gorge Road to the day use area and track to the gorge. You can take a shorter walk – it is only 2.8 km return to the Araluen Cascades.  https://youtu.be/prl-jtaqg-Q Jumping and diving are prohibited – there have been five deaths here since 1976. Many more have been seriously injured, some of these include spinal injuries. These incidents are specifically due to slipping on the wet slippery rocks and steep wet slopes—Parks say one slip could be fatal. Fast stream rises

Romantic Boonoo Boonoo Falls, New South Wales

Before you get to Boonoo Boonoo National Park, you need to get the lingo right! It’s pronounced Bunna Boo Nu. Practice it, soon it will roll off the tongue. I hadn’t quite done that in the video! https://youtu.be/PbkorYCfx4c The photos simply don’t do it justice! The lookout is where Banjo Paterson proposed to his missus, so they say! No wonder she said yes, Boonoo Boonoo Falls is breathtaking. It is an effort to get to also – 43 km from Stanthorpe, Queensland or 23 km from Tenterfield, New South Wales, turn west. It is 4 km on the Boonoo Boonoo

CAMP at Cypress Pine Campground, Boonoo Boonoo National Park, New South Wales

Cypress Pine Campground is the only camp in Boonoo Boonoo National Park. This is how you pronounce it! Located beside the Boonoo Boonoo River, there are firepits, BBQ and picnic tables at sites. Plus you’ll find a sheltered area and accessible toilets.  I’m coming back for the river walk, It is one beautiful river and gorge!  There are plentiful sites, but do book ahead – there is little mobile reception at this park.  Make sure you see Boonoo Boonoo Falls, the waterfall Banjo Patterson thought was romantic, whilst you are here!  You can also fish (get a NSW licence) – and

National Park must stay: Bald Rock Campground, New South Wales

We are definitely coming back to this wonderful spot! You can camp under the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest granite rock! Sites at Bald Rock Campground have plenty of vegetation and privacy, we loved the granite surrounds. Bald Rock was neutral ground, trade route and a meeting place for three of the Aboriginal nations of the area: the Jukambal, Bundgalung and Kamilleroi. The campground would be a wonderful location for groups. There is a sheltered area, but each site had picnic tables – the site we stopped at had a huge one. The firepits were very functional with BBQ plates that rotated.

What’s open at Litchfield National Park in the Northern Territory?

Have you been here? Hands down, it is such a favourite for us.  We loved coming up in the wet season – or near the end! There was still a lot open this time of year, BUT and it is a BIG but, it was so quiet on the tourist front. At Tjaebata Falls, there was no one else there. We had it all to ourselves! Locals have told us it’s been a late wet up Darwin way this year. But there was still plenty open for us to check out. Gates were mostly locked to the 4WD roads –

Waterfall camp: Butterfly Falls, Limmen National Park, Northern Territory

Butterfly Falls is in Limmen National Park, NT. You can camp beside them – budget priced, with toilets, shade, views and the CAMPS tick of approval! No pets or Big Rigs.  On the Savannah Way, it is a must do. You need to be self sufficient if driving this remote route. Remember it is seasonal, so you may not be able to swim here in the dry season.  Infact, it is the only safe swimming spot away from crocodiles, in the entire park! Towards the end of the dry it can become stagnant and unsuitable for a dip. What else to
