Petal Point – free camp at this remote Tassie Getaway

Photo credit No Boundaries Petal Point is a primitive camp situated high on an escarpment looking north across Bass Strait. Situated in the less travelled north east corner of Tasmania, we loved it because of its remoteness and panoramic views. At Petal Point, you need to be fully self-contained, take all your supplies in and take any evidence of your stay out. We settled in to the silence easily – only interruption was the ocean waves, sea breezes and the Mozart we belted out around the campfire at sunset – a luxury afforded because we were the only camping residents

How many free camps have a swimming pool? It is appreciation plus for the townsfolk of Branxholm for this gem. Tasmanian camping is open for business

13 February 2019 by Peter Gutwein, Treasurer There is no better place that caters for the free and low cost camping market. Importantly, visitors and locals alike continue to enjoy camping, and no camping sites have closed, or are flagged to close. There has been a review into the practical application of the policy in relation to council-owned camping facilities and the outcome will provide greater clarity and certainty for all stakeholders. Following consultation with councils, private operators, and RV users, it was found the previous policy needed clarification as well as simplification and that is exactly what has been achieved.

Scottsdale Northeast Park, Tasmania is a freedom favourite

The Scottsdale Northeast Park was so busy, I dropped in to see why it was so popular over the Australia Day weekend. I said hello to a great couple from Gippsland, Ron and Lee Harwood. I caught them enjoying a breakfast of pancakes and local blueberries. Along with another camper Joy Bradford we happily chatted for ages, enjoying the morning sunshine. They all agreed that Northeast Park was one of their favourite campspots and it’s easy to see why. You can’t immediately tell how pretty this campground is from the road. Free camp: Legerwood Memorial Park, Tasmania

The Legerwood Memorial RV Park and Day Use areas are adjacent to each other, with electric bbq’s, picnic tables, playground, toilets, an information centre, shade, water and a cafe across the road. Just a short detour off the Tasman Hwy, 86km north of Launceston, the Legerwood Carved Memorial trees are the centrepiece of the RV Park, they were sculpted to commemorate World War One fallen soldiers from the Dorset area. The Waterhouse Conservation Area is a popular place for camping and contains a diverse range of vegetation and wetland communities. There are no facilities at this camping area but if you are travelling in a caravan or camper van it’s a beautiful area to stay and explore. Although it is located so close to the beach, it is a sheltered and peaceful site with a long beach where you can stretch your legs and enjoy the view. Scamander Reserve is popular, with good reason, so try to arrive early if you are travelling during holiday periods or on the weekend. Recreational activities are king here on the lovely Scamander River where you can find bream, trout and occasionally cocky, salmon, trevalla and mullet. The campsite has toilets, shade, water, BBQs, mobile reception and a resident eel, plus it is pet friendly. Bring your mossie repellant, fishing gear or kayak and firewood!
