2022 Best Beach #17: Lake Wabby, K’gari Fraser Island, Queensland

Our daughter enjoyed her visit to K’gari and Lake Wabby this summer Image by Max Clarke K’gari is world heritage listed wonderland, and part of the Great Sandy National Park. The Lake Wabby walk starts a few minutes drive north from the village of Eurong, off the beach. We were astounded one of the kids spotted an echidna at the start of the track – and it stayed put while we all had a chance to look. Poona Lake is a hidden wonder in Rainbow Beach, Queensland

We love Poona Lake. Like K’gari Fraser Island lakes, you’ll see rainforest tower above ancient sand dunes – it’s a rare heritage marvel! It is a short, shaded walk into a gorgeous hidden wonder, beloved by locals and visitors. Poona Lake is the largest of its kind in Cooloola, 12 hectares of water! Perched lakes are the most common here and form from a ‘saucer’ of organic matter makes a depression in the dunes. Then, water collects and a lake is born. As you enter the water, it is crystal clear. Then at a couple of metres – pitch black!

Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have two rural locations on their itinerary for October – Fraser Island K’gari and Dubbo.
