After a low-key two and a half years, the Barrow Creek Hotel has been able to revitalise and offer meals and a place to stay to the weary traveller between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek. This welcoming roadhouse charges a small fee for unpowered pet-friendly sites at the side of the pub with use of amenities, and a bit extra for power. “Unbeatable” beachfront camping at Richardsons Beach, Freycinet National Park, Tasmania

Wow, what an amazing spot in Coles Bay, Freycinet National Park! Bec from Look The World In The Eye has been travelling Australia for six months when they came across this beauty in Tasmania. They said, “Unbeatable position! This is one of the nicest spots we’ve camped!” “$13 for unpowered ‘tent’ sites (not all suitable to sleep in a car as some car parks sloped – we were in site #30 which was great for our van) or $16 for power and water (all powered sites suitable for caravans).” This site is Richardsons Beach, just outside Coles Bay – beside Ranger

Budget priced and pet friendly: Doonvilla RV Park, Maryborough, Queensland

Maryborough, on the Fraser Coast of Queensland, really gets the thumbs up from us when it comes to free and budget camping options. Doonvilla RV Park is run by the Doon Villa Football Club Inc. Next to Maryborough Airport, Qld. Don’t worry – we couldn’t even hear the planes when we were there, the larger airport is in nearby Hervey Bay. It is great to be helping a local club for children! Perth’s best camping secret: Carmel Cider Co, Western Australia

You know what they say about an apple a day! Carmel Cider Co Camp is our Ambassador Daniel’s happy place and Perth’s best kept camping secret – where you can camp amongst the apple trees or in the paddock and have a cidery down the driveway! It is just $20 a night, per vehicle, for an unpowered site. Ambassador Manda says the owners are lovely and there are toilets on site too (no showers or power) and it is only 25 minutes from Perth! There are minimal facilities, a dam for kayaking / swimming, cidery open for sales and tasting.

Chambers Pillar: MUST SEE and 4WD budget camp, Northern Territory

Not just a camp area, this historical reserve is 160 km south of Alice Springs and is dominated by a 50m high sandstone pillar. At sunrise and sunset, the red and orange in the rock are impressive over the Simpson Desert plain. There are short walks so you can explore, take photos and local wildlife. Castle Rock, Northern Territory The local Aboriginal people believe that the pillar is the gecko ancestor Itirkawara.
