We were so impressed by this historical site, we’ve added it to the CAMPS App!
Driving south of Teebar and Brooweena in Queensland’s Fraser region, I’m glad we stopped, it is worth checking out Memorial Bridge.
“No Greater Sacrifice” are the words words you’ll read under the picnic shelter.
Built by the community, in honour of their soldiers… it is the only privately erected war memorial in Queensland.
Poignantly, the Woocoo Shire’s returned soldiers are listed on one pillar, and soldiers who lost their lives in WWII are on the other.
Built by station hands from Mount Joseph Station and returned serviceman, you’ll read the 1921 opening was followed by the National Anthem, a basket picnic and a dance at Teebar Hall, Brooweena – which is also listed as a campground!
It is not listed for camping, there are no facilities at this picnic area – just the bridge, the creek a shelter and table.
Would you believe just two days after we stopped here, another traveller told us about it? They were as equally touched by the memorial, and agreed it was a suprising stop-off on their trip!
Find it on the Brooweena Woolooga Rd, near Maryborough in the CAMPS Australia Wide App.
