Penguin is west of Ulverstone and Devonport, a gorgeous place to visit with two free and one donation campsite. All beachfront to the Bass Strait!
Hall Point (update: now permanently closed for camping)
We met Neil and Jovie at Halls Point, Tasmania who said. “We find all our stays in the book! We can’t be happier with our travel with CAMPS.”
What a great site they had – free and oceanfront. Penguins, too! I can’t believe you’ll see them at night here. It is a protected penguin colony, so definitely no pets allowed.
Hall Point is not a large area, and it is close to the road and railway. Some sites back onto the vegetation rather than the beach.
Self contained vehicles are required because there are no facilities – just a few picnic benches and views! Maximum 48 hours stay here.
Midway Point
This site has loads more room than Hall Point, located on the same beach! Pets are allowed at this end – and there is room for Big Rigs. Self Contained vehicles only. There is a maximum 48 hours stay.
Preservation Bay (update: now permanently closed for camping)
This donation camp is located next to the Surf Club. Self contained vehicles only, pets allowed plus there is a playground, boat ramp and picnic tables. It is not as spacious as Midway Point, and it is closer to the road – but the views are fantastic.
Located at a patrolled beach, surf club facilities are not available for use. However donations for the site help train future lifesavers and support the club. You are located on a coastal reserve.
By the way, there’s a railway line along this stretch. So novel – especially when you visit Penguin. Then there is Penguin Caravan Park and the gorgeous town of Penguin to explore. Make sure you check out the book exchange.
