Although this free site is overnight only, it has so much else going for it. Mother of Ducks Lagoon is located in Guyra, New South Wales. Guyra is the town with the greatest elevation in the New England High Country. A town that is often overlooked for its larger neighbours, Armidale and Glen Innes, it is well worth a stop.
When we lived in Armidale, we drove to Black Mountain and Guyra to make snowmen. Occasionally, we were able to build them in Armidale, too!
Guyra is the land of lamb and potatoes – also the name of their January Festival. There is a trout farm, too – and you won’t go hungry with their cafes and pubs.
Firstly, this large, flat picnic area is waterside. Not of the swimming variety – more watch the birds come and sing, variety. In fact, it is perfect for bird lovers, with information about local birds and shaded areas to look for them over the wetland. There is also another wetland for birdwatching, north of town, called Little Llangothlin Nature Reserve.
You could walk to the shops, it is so close. There are plenty of picnic tables and BBQs, room for Big Rigs and mobile coverage. The site is pet friendly.
There are good toilet facilities at the day use area next door. The dump point is adjacent, as well as a water station.
Despite the very windy day when we visited, I still enjoyed my walk over the picnic areas and golf course to the wetland and platform. (That’s right, golfers, you couldn’t get any closer to the fairways!)
The shady park was very well maintained – in fact, mowing was in progress on our visit. And there is a cute book exchange! Great job, Guyra! We visited after an overnighter at the spectacular Cathedral Rock National Park. However, being so close to Waterfall Way, national parks, gorges, waterfalls and dams and all around this special region of New South Wales.
