To think I did not realise this museum was in existence, let alone just a few hours from us!
If you are travelling through or staying nearby Bundaberg, QLD, do stop in to the Hinkler Hall of Aviation.
We brought our 13-year-old and his mate. But this museum is not only the domain of kids, it truly has something for all ages.
Why was it so good? I am not a lover of planes, but it did not matter. For me, everything was so hands on. Kids were occupied on different machines and activities – hubby the same, with plenty of little known history to catch up on.
It really does “bring to life” Bert Hinkler, a boy so determined he hand-built gliders and flew them successfully on Mon Repos Beach! A man who served in WWI with a pioneering solo flight from England to Australia in 1928 and the world’s first solo flight across the South Atlantic in 1931.
There’s glider simulators, movies, dress ups, you can take a photo in the replica, and walk through Bert’s house. We all loved the flight simulators, but were also amazed by what Bundaberg-born Bert achieved.
You’ll find this enthralling museum at the Bundaberg Botanic Gardens – worth a wander, too. Also the location of Fairymead House and Sugar History Museum and the Australian Sugar Cane Railway.
