Just back from South Australia, the team at CAMPS AUSTRALIA WIDE had a bird’s eye view of a gorgeous free camp, on the Murray River.
Swan Reach is a lovely little town, there is a caravan park close to the ferry, a vintage car museum (open by appointment), a craft shop, cracking op shop and we had to stop into the hotel. Perched on the hill, it had great views of Tenbury Hunter Reserve.
Make sure you check out the historical photos on the wall of the pub.
This Murray River camp has spectacular cliff views plus a free ferry. This 24-hour service, provided by the SA Government, takes you across to the river to town, below Murray River Lock #1. You might even see a paddlesteamer!
As one of the reviews on our Camps Australia Wide App says, “no fees and a proper toilet” – what more could you wish for, really?
There is a 5-night limit and you are advised to get in early, it is popular!
All you need to do is hop back on the ferry to town – there is also a café, general store (look for the flood markings) and bakery – you will find some free WiFi locations, too.
See what the camp is like from the other side of the river.
Whilst you are in the area, go see the super impressive Big Bend Cliffs, the tallest on the Murray – and all the cockatoos nesting there!
We explored local caves and Ngaut Ngaut Conservation Park. Book a tour – it was fantastic. There are free camps all along the river!
It is no wonder this site has our CAMPS tick of approval!
Take the ferry across to the west side of the river. Bush camping is 500 metres east of ferry crossing.
Find it in the CAMPS AUSTRALIA WIDE App, CAMPS Pendium box set, Travel Packs and CAMPS 11.
