BHP Mt Whaleback Tour at Newman WA
Life on the Road

52 years between visits: BHP Mt Whaleback Tour at Newman, Western Australia

I visited the Mt Whaleback iron ore mine in September 1969 which was the year that its ore was first shipped overseas.   Along with 23 girls and guys in our early twenties we chartered a bus to take us on a tour of the Pilbara region of Western Australia, sleeping under the stars on camp stretchers and cooking meals over camp fires.  Fast forward to last September, 52 years later and I am visiting the Pilbara region for the second time.  This time in the comfort of a luxury caravan with Maureen, my wife of 50 years. In 1969 Mt

An ANZAC Story: Push to the Bush

Rod and Pam Elkington On April 15, Pam and Rod Elkington will set out on an outback trip with a difference. Along with other veterans they will visit remote towns and tell them about ANZAC Day.  “When we first started Push to the Bush,” said Rod, “Wyandra had 15-16 kids in the school and we marched on ANZAC Day. There were whole heaps of mums and dads asking questions – turns out they weren’t alive when we came back from Vietnam. “It was the whole family – so we’re actually getting two chops at the cherry!” That was 16 years ago,

Shearer’s Ride stops at Myall Park Botanic Garden, Queensland

Shearers Ride 2020 Myall Park Botanic Garden is QLD site 699 in the Camps 10 book, hosted the Shearers Ride 2020 (take 2) 3-9 October. I didn’t know that it was common for shearers to ride their bicycles from shed to shed as they worked across the country during shearing season. The social ride covers about 400 km all up – riding old steel single speed, 2/3 speed internal geared bicycles – they range from 1900 to 1960 with no modern MTBs or gravel bikes. Here’s what their week looks like, finishing tomorrow where they started in Meandarra, Queensland, Australia.

Haddon Corner
Destinations

Have you been to Haddon Corner, South Australia?

Borders have been a bit controversial lately, haven’t they? Haddon Corner (1880), marks the north-eastern extension of the Queensland-South Australia border, and was important for the colonial government and pastoralists of the time. We thought you’d like to see this corner of Queensland and update… sent in by Shez Tedford. The turn off is off the Arrabury road. There is a green finger sign to Haddon Corner. It is a gravel road but in fairly good condition. This would depend on whether there has been any rain. If that is the case, this road along with all others in the
