Love a waterhole… and Sadleir’s Waterhole (also known as the Morven Hotel) is a beauty! After chatting with other travellers on the verandah, we parked down the road at the Rec Ground, then walked back for dinner!
Well done, Morven – you made our BEST OF list for the BEST PRICED STEAK. Not only was it under $30, but it was perfectly cooked, generously sized, with mash, vege and chips!
Generous serves, yummy food, friendly service and an interesting story: ANZAC Day 2016 the old pub burnt down. Four years without the hub of the community, eight families banded together to form a co-operative.
Named after Captain Sadleir and his wife – the town was built around their waterhole, and styled like a shearing shed – it is a little oasis in the bush.
You can camp down the road at Morven Rec Ground…
…or at nearby Gidgees Bush Camp with their coffee shop and walking track in Ooline Country.
Close to town, both are popular, pet friendly and budget priced and you’ll find them in the CAMPS App (free to download) and our guides. The pub also has motel accommodation.
Opening in 2020, the hotel owners are intent on supporting the community, and bringing travellers to town. I would come back just for the steak and veg!
This was Day 68 of our winter roadtrip to WA and back. I just loved this route in QLD, on our trip from Blackall, Tambo and Augathella. Put it on your list!
