Here’s our personal favourites from where we’ve been this year. Heatley and I have travelled far and wide in 2022, and so have our CAMPS Ambassadors. So grab a cuppa, and check out our list for your 2023 trip planning! Click on the links to find out more!

Tasmania

Oh, I’ll be back in a heartbeat. We weren’t here for long, but in usual CAMPS style we covered some country. From Launceston to Marrawah on the West Coast, and all down the north east corner. Ahhh! So this is tough. The Bay of Fires is hard to beat – Sloop Reef? One of the Cosy Corner camps?

How about Penguin, Leven Canyon and Liffey Falls? I loved the wildness of Marrawah and Arthur River in the Tarkine – but Stanley, I think you are my favourite! There’s a great caravan park and recreation ground here and The Nut is pretty cool.

Victoria

This year we’ve really only travelled to and from the High Country. There is SOOO much here. We are both in love with Dinner Plain (our 3 storey, 3 bedroom plus loft chalet is available for holiday bookings) – and the walk-in camping at JB Plain Hut was contrasting to see out of the snow season. But winner-winner is Pioneer Bridges, a beautiful spacious free camp we checked out onroute to Milawa. So there was wine and cheese, too! Find it in our guides and App.

Queensland

Lake Lenthall, Queensland (in the school break and we had this view all to ourselves!)

Lake Lenthall and the friendly caretaker are hidden gems – we also loved our recent celebratory stop at Theebine Hotel. The Royal Hotel at Harrisville in the Scenic Rim is right on the river, pet friendly and free. Washpool Camping Reserve on Lake Leslie and we had an awesome few days at Habitat Noosa – they also deserve big plugs!

Of course, as residents, we’ve seen a lot this year – so we’ve quite a list of Queensland recommendations for you!

New South Wales

Platypus Flat, New South Wales

Hands down, Platypus Flat Camp in the Nymboida-binderay National Park takes my gong. Mendooran has a free camp, walking distance to the pub, loads of facilities, right on the Castlereagh River – just so much on offer. Joe O’Connor RV Park in Yass is also a waterside beauty, and Yass has other camping options, too. For adventure, I think our best find was Bald Rock National Park and the terrifying climb down! So worth it! Neighbouring Boonoo Boonoo National Park also had gobsmacking views!

(By the way, we’ve given 10 NEW red ticks to NSW sites – we thought they were awesome!)

Western Australia

We haven’t personally visited this great big state this year. But our Ambassadors have hardly left it! Here’s a selection of wonderful WA locations.

Dale and Tracey from Adams Family Travel’s said, “Our favourite would have to be Honeymoon Bay in the Kimberley region. Love the journey to get there and also the remoteness of this place.”

Overland Exposure’s Manda and Daniel said their favourite was South Lefroy. “You can park right on the beach – the BEST snorkelling – it is crystal clear. There’s a protected bay for the kids. It’s perfect.”

Northern Territory

Up here for a mate’s big birthday celebration, we give a big thanks to Litchfield Tourist Park, near Batchelor. It had everything we needed. It is not often we stay in a cabin, and it was a wonderful few days, so close to the national park, which is such a favourite with Heatley and I. We visited late March, such a difference from previous winter camping here.

South Australia

I had a bird’s eye view to gorgeous Murray River camps from Mannum to Swan Reach. So many beauties. I actually walked 9 km to Hettner Landing and Walker Flat Boat Ramp

Tenbury Hunter Reserve is also fantastic, and you take the ferry to the Swan Reach Hotel! All three camps are free and pet friendly.

Australian Capital Territory

Cotter Campground, ACT

Let’s not forget Canberra – we were there, too! I loved Woods Reserve because it is so close to a waterfall and Cotter Campground is heavenly with swimming holes all around! Canberra campgrounds are in with New South Wales maps and listings in your CAMPS guides.
